I first became aware of Dr. Gary Ranker while working at Jefferies and Company as head of M&A until early 2005. I had observed Gary working with a few of my colleagues in banking at Jefferies, and heard from them that they were obtaining value from the experience. Further, they discussed with me their initial thought of whether using the coach (who was an internal company provided resource) would indicate to others that there was an issue with which to be concerned.
They told me that they felt comfortable and realized that Gary had an ability to help them be more productive and it was worth the time invested. Gary would help the person being coached to better understand and acknowledge their own agenda, and develop better "social antenna" to see what others around are wanting to achieve, and what their differing agendas are. Through this understanding and development of new skills, the person being coached was able to develop a more solid strategy to achieve their own goals.
It's true that Gary's greatest skill lies in being able to help a senior executive navigate through corporate cultures that are highly politicized. This skill has been discussed in numerous articles over the past few years as being a distinguishing factor between Gary and the other top ranked coaches who each have a slightly different expertise. He's been acknowledged by Forbes and other media as one of the top five coaches in the world and has been focusing on individual coaching for over 15 years.
The experience I had was one of the more profound I've ever had. I gained immense understanding of myself and how others see me. Some of the recommendations and suggestions that Gary gave me helped to make my interactions with others more efficient and productive.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Gary to a very senior person who is serious about wanting to be more of the best they can be, and is willing to engage in being brutally frank in discussing themselves and their true goals. From personal experience I know this is hard work, but is worth it.
If anyone would like to have more information, I'd be glad to talk in more detail about my thoughts about Gary's coaching, and where/when it is most applicable. He is at the top of his field, and is specialized, and is not for everyone, or every circumstance. I think it is well worth your time to investigate him further if you are a senior executive who is seriously thinking about being coached.
