Political Dilemmas at Work by Gary Ranker, with Colin Gautrey and Mike Phipps

Synopsis of Coaching with Gary Ranker:

I first became aware of Gary Ranker's work when he was working with a GE Capital senior executive who was very talented, highly valued, yet problematic. In this particular instance Gary was hired to improve this individual's communication style which had become a serious impediment to his effectiveness.

As part of the coaching process, I was frequently interviewed by Gary Ranker about this executive and the business environment. I was fascinated by the entire process of remediating someone whose interpersonal behavior was seriously getting in the way of overall productivity. During these discussions I would probe deeper with Gary into how his coaching techniques could be applied to situations other than remedial behavior change.

It soon became apparent that the coaching techniques could be invaluable to me in realizing my goals of becoming a senior business leader. Not everyone has the destructive interpersonal style issues that this executive had. But it was obvious to me that Gary Ranker's coaching techniques could improve any individual, even if they did not have severe behavioral issues.

I commenced the coaching with Gary and I can tell you it was the most valuable self development exercise I have ever undertaken. The coaching process provides you with the information, the tools, and most importantly, the coaching and support needed to make positive changes.

Gary gathers the necessary data and information from your work colleagues in a way that is not threatening to either party. He helps translate and analyze the information for you and provides you with an extensive toolkit to help change the targeted behaviors. The likelihood of successful behavior change is increased through in-depth ongoing coaching over time. This facilitates taking the actions necessary to change behavior and maximize effectiveness.

The coaching has taught me to be more strategic about my interactions with people. He has taught me to be "situational" depending upon the audience and the impression I wish to leave. I am now more strategic about my career and about my life.

The work I have done with Gary has had a notable, positive impact on me and on the success I have achieved in my career. The perception my work colleagues have of me has improved (measured with data) and my relationships with my colleagues are more open, trusting and effective.

In my opinion the keys to success in Gary Ranker's coaching techniques are:

•  You have to want to do it.

•  You must be prepared to face the truth.

•  You must be prepared to take action based upon the information collected.

•  You must be prepared to use the tools. They work.

•  Constantly remind yourself of your "goals".

Even though I am no longer in a formal "coaching" arrangement with Gary I continue to keep in frequent contact with him to get his perspective on a variety of issues . organizational, behavioral, and otherwise. He continues to provide me with valuable insight.
